A 5 gallon fish tank is classified as a nano aquarium.
I personally would not go any smaller than a 5 gallon fish tank as the smaller the tank the more difficult it is to keep the water parameters stable and the less livestock it can hold.
A 5 gallon fish tank is perfect for an office desk or kitchen counter.
